The Outback Regional Gallery oversees the development, preservation and storage of the museums and gallery’s diverse collection. The collection’s distinct flavour is ‘Outback’ reflecting our region’s people, cultural diversity and history. The collection is often included in the gallery’s alternating program for visitors to enjoy.
Since the late 1950’s The Winton Shire Council’s initiative to develop arts and culture in the Outback regions has included collaborations with significant Australian artists for commission-based artworks including the late Daphne Mayo MBE.
The Outback Regional Gallery’s art collection features work by prominent local and national artists including Joe Furlonger, Elisabeth Cummings, Ken Done AM, Sally Ogg, Lucy Culliton, Hugh Sawrey, Eddie Hackman, Willam Billy Joe Chambers and The Hermannsburg Potters.
The John Villiers Outback Art Prize’s Major Award annually attracts a significant contemporary acquisition through the prize’s theme ‘Outback: A Sense of Place.’
