Architecture

The new Waltzing Matilda Centre was designed by award winning architects, Cox Architecture, to reflect the spirit of Australia’s most famous song through an immersive architectural and interpretive experience. Drawing inspiration from Winton’s rugged landscape, the centre uses robust materials such as rusted steel and bush-hammered concrete to echo the jump-up rock formations, billabongs, and resilient character of the region.

The concept was to design a centre that accommodates a dedicated exhibition space, reading room, spectacular arrival space, gallery, retail outlet, tourist information hub and café, and an internal courtyard connecting to outdoor displays. The building’s fluid forms, tall volumes and carefully crafted details create a journey of movement, memory, and discovery.

The centre has won multiple awards, including a 2019 National Winner for Public Design and Best of State Commercial Design (QLD) by the Australian Interior Design Awards.
