Willie Mar Senior created his Chinese market garden in 1923 to make sure the locals got plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Not a simple task in the hot dry conditions of the Outback. Later, his son joined him and took over the reins. The market garden and shop remained open until a big flood in 2000 wiped out the yard. Now you can take a self-guided walk through possibly the last working Chinese market garden in Queensland. A much-loved local character, Willie Jnr had a smile for everyone as he drove his old truck around town delivering fruit and vegies to the locals. Experience authentic early Chinese history in western Queensland. See remnants of the traditional pond watering system, and the collection of homemade rooster cages and garden tools in this rare and significant historical site.
