Waltzing Matilda Centre
If there’s one song that lives in the heart of all Australians, it’s Waltzing Matilda…
The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the first museum in the world dedicated to a song!
Step inside the Waltzing Matilda Museum, where interactive exhibitions and state-of-the-art displays bring to life the history of Western Queensland and the story behind A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s iconic ballad.
Written at nearby Dagworth Station in 1895 and first performed at Winton’s North Gregory Hotel, Waltzing Matilda has become Australia’s unofficial national anthem.
Delve deeper into local history at the Qantilda Museum, with stories of the 1891 Shearers’ Strike and the early days of Qantas. Explore Christina Macpherson’s Cottage, view vintage farming equipment in the Machinery and Vehicle Sheds, and see how Winton rode on ‘the sheep’s back’ in the Shearing Shed. Outside, a BB18¼ Class Steam Locomotive sits at the original Chorregon Siding – a tribute to the region’s railway past.
Wander through the Exhibition Space to uncover the stories of WWI. Then, discover contemporary art in the Outback Regional Gallery, home to a diverse program of exhibitions and the annual John Villiers Outback Art Prize, generously sponsored by The John Villiers Trust.
Browse the gift shop or relax with a coffee or bite to eat at the Tuckerbox Café. And if you’re looking for maps, brochures or local tips, our friendly team at the Visitor Information Centre is here to help you make the most of your time in Winton and beyond.
