Winton and the Ergon Energy Tidy Towns State Awards 2010

6 September 2010

On 16th July, Winton was named as Western Queensland’s Tidiest Town, as well as picking up awards in two categories:
  • Paradise & Bishopp Outdoor Advertising Heritage Award; and
  • Partnerships Award
On 30th September, Winton representatives Mayor Ed Warren and Deputy CEO Alan Rayment attended the Tidy Towns State Awards in Mackay. Winton was one of seven finalists in the coveted category of Queensland’s Tidiest Town. We also featured in the finals along with two others for the Partnerships Award category.
Unfortunately Winton was unsuccessful in both of these categories, with Stanthorpe taking the honour of Queensland’s Tidiest Town, and the Charters Towers Neighbourhood Centre winning in the Partnerships Award category.
Winton Shire Council would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the winners in all categories of the awards, and to thank the Winton Community for supporting our bid for Queensland’s Tidiest Town. It was a great success to achieve Western Queensland’s Tidiest Town for 2010, and we look forward to participating again next year.
Western Queensland's Tidiest Town is WINTON!

Press release from Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland, 16 July

Winton was today named Western Queensland’s Tidiest Town at the 2010 Ergon Energy Tidy Towns Regional Awards.

Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland CEO, Rick Burnett said the judges had no hesitation in awarding this title to Winton.

“Winton was presented with enthusiasm and passion and it is apparent there is a high level of pride in this community,” Mr Burnett said.

“In entering their town everyone involved demonstrated a very clear and thorough understanding of the criteria, the standards and key indicators for each category. Everything that was declared in their written statement was evident and well supported as we were taken on a thorough and comprehensive tour of the town. It was clear to us that Winton has a dynamic Council team supported by an equally dynamic community.

Ergon Energy General Manager Operations Southern Paul Jordon said as the principal sponsor of the Queensland Tidy Towns for the past 12 years, Ergon Energy had seen first hand the pride and passion people have in their local communities and the effort they put in to presenting their communities in the best possible light.

104 towns from eight regions throughout Queensland entered the Tidy Towns program this year.

“I congratulate Winton and today’s outstanding achievement award winners, and wish them all the best in the lead up to the State Awards announcements in August”.

The Tidy Towns program is all about building on that community pride and fostering sustainable communities.

“In the 11 years we have been associated with the Program we’ve seen the enormous difference it has made” he said

“People are rightfully proud of their local community and this program gives them an opportunity to showcase what makes a particular community unique.”

“We are proud to partner Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to supporting the regional communities in which we operate” he said.

“This partnership also provides with an opportunity to promote our philosophy of sustainability through green energy, environmental awareness and regional development in Queensland.

2010 Outback Queensland Tourism Awards... and the Winner is...

5 July 2010

Congratulations to Winton Shire Council! Who have, after much deliberation, been awarded the right to host the 2010 Outback Queensland Tourism Awards!

Well done!

2009 was a year of renewal for the Outback Queensland Tourism Association. Relocating from Brisbane to Longreach, all new staff and a clean slate to begin 2010.

What better way to celebrate this new start than by re-implementing the Outback Queensland Tourism Awards - an opportunity for the regions and operators to come together in recognition of all that they have achieved over the precedeing twelve months.

A judge's job is never easy, and, having received a number of very high quality submissions the judging panel faced a tough decision in selecting this year's Awards host.

We would like to thank Boulia Shire Council and Blackall-Tambo Regional Council for their submissions - Congratulations on all your efforts and hard work. While unsuccessful on this occasion their submissions showed a great deal of creativity, potential and promise and we look forward to the opportunity of working with them in the future.

With the real work yet to come we look forward to seeing the showcase on offer at Winton and to sharing these Awards with you, our members once again.

Winton Shire Council Appoints a Second Shire Ambassador

17 June 2010

The Winton Shire Council has recognised the outstanding contributions of Mr Peter Evert BEM AM to the Winton community and tourism industry by appointing him as the second Shire Ambassador. This appointment not only recognises his past contributions, but also recognises his ongoing role in the promotion of Winton.
Mr Evert says, “My late brother Vince and I had always believed that Winton could become an Outback tourism Mecca because of its character, uniqueness, history, beauty and most importantly its people.” Because of this belief, Mr Evert assisted in laying the foundations of the tourism industry in Winton, serving on various Associations, Clubs and Board Committees. His contributions include:
  • Serving as a Councillor, and twice as Deputy Mayor, over 26 years;
  • Founding member President of the first Outback Festival;
  • Founding member of the Winton Tourism Promotion Association and Historical Society;
  • Involvement in the Centenary celebrations and the planning of the Waltzing Matilda Centre; and
  • Serving as the Inaugural Chairman of the Outback Queensland Tourism Authority, held for 18 years, uniting Outback Queensland to promote itself as a whole.
The inaugural Shire Ambassador Mr Vince Corbin OAM, appointed in September 2008, congratulates Mr Evert on his appointment. “I believe it is a great honour to be appointed Shire Ambassador. Having known Peter since 1974, I believe he will fulfil the role admirably.”
Mayor Ed Warren is very pleased with the appointment of second Shire Ambassador. “Peter is a very worthy appointment as our second Shire Ambassador given his association and time in Western Queensland, particularly in tourism. He will make an excellent ambassador, not only for Winton but for the whole of the Outback region.”
A formal presentation was made to Mr Evert at the 17 June 2010 Council Meeting.
