Historic Winton

There are many sites around the Shire where you can discover Winton's recent and pioneering history.

>> Winton's Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum was opened in 2007 and on display are many restored vintage vehicles.

>> The North Gregory Hotel is an important local landmark, where local legend has it that the first public performance of Waltzing Matilda occurred.

>> Take a trip out to the Old Cork Homestead Ruins on the Diamantina, one of Winton's oldest homesteads.

>> Visit Pelican Waterhole, 1km west of the current town of Winton, where the first settlement occurred in 1875.

Birthplace of QANTAS

Winton is held to be the Birthplace of QANTAS. On 16th November, 1920, it was first registered as a company in Winton, with the first Board Meeting held at the Winton Club on 10th February, 1921. Later, the main office of QANTAS moved to Longreach.
